A letter from the editors

The original Cape Cod Compass usually opened with the same theme: a peninsula looking at itself critically, afraid of what might be lost. Writers, photographers, and editors found solace in small recurring rhythms, like a beach plum or wildflower in bloom. After the pandemic, change on the Cape seems to be happening at an accelerated pace. In the last five years, we’ve seen rapid shifts in demographics, housing costs, humidity levels, and the sea creatures that call the sandy elbow home. The Cape has always grappled with loss, congestion, and existential anxiety, and rightfully so. But we feel that change is inevitable. With that in mind, we asked ourselves how we can bring people closer to create a collective vision of Cape Cod, a place that means so much to so many. In this first issue, we explore many versions of belonging, sharing stories of our community, our land, and our histories. It’s a blurry, messy snapshot of a place always in motion. Cape Cod is a textured, stunning, and deeply flawed place. We love it for everything it is, everything it’s not, and everything it can become. We hope you will, too.
