In this second issue, we take on enduring historical narratives, explore the artist-life in Outer Cape, and look at the work of pioneering ecological researchers whose work still pushes for a brighter future. We also bring in voices from other coastal communities that face the same challenges—lack of affordable housing, the precarity of seasonal labor, and fragile ecosystems—and share the same strengths: resilience, creativity, and the power of small communities.

As our portrait of the Cape expands, we look beneath the surface and confront harsher realities. By grounding ourselves in detail, this issue pieces together a fuller picture of the Cape—one we hope helps all of us see this place more clearly.

Issue 01, 2024
The first issue of Cape Cod Compass explores one of the themes that the original magazine explored: the existential anxiety that comes with a place always in flux. In this first issue, we explore the Outer Cape’s kettle ponds, learn about the life cycle of an oyster on the tidal flatlands of Yarmouth, and spend days driving from one end of the Cape to the other. It’s a blurry, messy snapshot of a place always in motion. Cape Cod is a textured, stunning, and deeply flawed place. We love it for everything it is, everything it’s not, and everything it can become. We hope you will too.

Featuring contributors Aaron A. Binaco, Abraham Storer, Adam Kremer, Bobby Doherty, Caroline Tompkins, Cole Barash, Kenyon Anderson, Rachel Hahn, Ryan Lowry, Shonagh Marshall, and Timothy O’Connell.
